A DIY facial at home is more than just a skincare routine; it can be a self care ritual that allows you to connect with yourself while enjoying some extra pampering and refreshing your skin. You can tailor it to your needs and time frame, and you do not need any experience other than a little research to prepare.

Budget wise it’s the same. You do not need to break the bank to have a good at home facial kit. There were many times that I would be home alone, when all the shops were closed, but I really wanted to have a facial. So I did a few google searches and raided my kitchen. Some of the products worked so well, I still make and use them to this day.

Incorporating a DIY facial into your regular skincare routine, can elevate your self-care rituals revealing glowing, healthy skin without leaving the comfort of your home.

Try it out and embrace the radiance. A basic at home facial routine is around 9 easy steps.

1. Cleanse 2. Exfoliate 3. Steam 4. Mask 5. Toner 6. Serum 7. Rich Moisturizer 8. Massage 9. Oil

Start with clean hands and a clean face to prevent introducing any dirt or bacteria to your open pores. Wash and disinfect hands regularly throughout the steps. Tie your hair back to prevent it from falling into the steam.

1. Double Cleanse

First step is to cleanse away the day. Start with an oil based cleanser or balm. Why? Because it helps break down all the sunscreen, makeup and impurities. Gently massage it into the skin to really penetrate the products. Remove any excess with a tissue or cotton pad. Follow with a water-based or gentle cleanser to thoroughly clean your skin.

2. Exfoliate After Cleansing

Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promote skin renewal. Use a physical scrub and lightly, slowly rub your fingers in circles on your face avoiding the delicate eye area. 30 – 60 seconds is plenty. I usually start at the chin and work my way up.

NOTE. For some a physical scrub is not an option, and there are some amazing chemical exfoliants. As the skin may be more sensitive after a chemical exfoliation I would recommend the following;

  • Skipping the steam step OR
  • Use a warm damp towel to gently pat the skin.

3. At Home Facial Steam

*Be cautious with steam, as it can be too harsh for some skin types. If you have sensitive skin, consider using a warm, damp towel to gently pat the skin instead.

Steaming can help open pores and prepare your skin for the next steps. If you have a steamer, put on your regular setting and go. If you don’t, no problem, you can make your own steamer. Take some towels and set them aside. Get a wide basin or pot and heat some water in the kettle.

Place the container on a sturdy and stable surface. Ensure you have a comfortable seat and that the steaming setup is stable. You may want to sit at a table with a chair, or place the bowl on the floor with cushions for support.

Put the boiling water into the container (fill it to about one-third to one-half full), sit down and prepare to lean over the steam. Keep your face at a comfortable distance from the hot water to prevent burns. Typically, maintaining a distance of 12 to 18 inches is recommended.

Take a towel and place it over your shoulders and sit with your face over the bowl of steam. Adjust the towel over your head to create a tent if you find it comfortable. This can help trap the steam and intensify the effects. Sit for a few minutes, 5 to 10 minutes max to avoid overexposure, especially for individuals with sensitive or dry skin.

4. Full Face Mask

Choose a face mask that addresses your specific skincare concerns (e.g., hydrating, detox, or sheet mask). Follow the instructions on the product for application and duration and relax 🙂 If you use a sheet mask skip the next step.

5. Toner

After removing/rinsing off the mask, apply a toner to balance the skin’s pH and prepare it for the last  products. I would avoid anything too harsh like acids or astringents and go for a mild type e.g. rose water or aloe.

6. Nourishing Serum

Serums contain concentrated active ingredients to target specific skin concerns. Select a serum based on your skin needs and apply in upward strokes to the face. If you used a sheet mask, pat the remaining serum into your skin.

7. Night Cream or Rich Moisturizer

Apply your favorite rich moisturizer or night cream on top of the serum.

8. DIY Facial Massage

Massage can improve blood circulation and help with product absorption. Gently massage the cream into your skin and be gentle to avoid tugging or stretching the skin. There are some fantastic follow along tutorials on TikTok and YouTube.

9. Facial Oil

Finally, lock in all that moisture with your best facial oil (e.g. Almond, jojoba, vitamin E). Apply a few drops, warming it in the palm of your hands, before pressing it onto your skin.
