Rescue your skin post-party: Self care in the wake of the aftermath of a night out with a focus on skin recovery. Discover effective strategies to revive your complexion after a night of makeup slip ups, dehydration, and indulgent fast food.
An evening out with friends and loved ones can be a whirlwind of happiness, laughter, and unforgettable moments. The contagious energy of celebrations and good vibes, often creates an atmosphere of carefree euphoria. Amidst the endless chatter and refilled drinks, lifelong memories are made, destined to stay in our hearts forever.
Occasionally, amongst all the excitement, it’s easy to lose track of personal boundaries. Forgetting to hydrate between the laughter or getting caught up in the momentum of the fun and excitement, it’s common to overlook our well-being. The night often comes to an end with a craving for indulgent, comforting food. resulting in a hurried stop at the nearest fast-food joint to satisfy rumbling stomachs, followed by a tired journey home in a taxi.
Arriving home to the welcoming sight of a warm bed feels like a slice of heaven after a long night and the allure of collapsing into bed seems irresistible, drifting into sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow.
Waking up after a night of celebration can sometimes bring a mix of emotions. The after effects of alcohol and fast food can leave us feeling groggy, disoriented, and physically uncomfortable. As we slowly open our eyes, the remnants of last night’s indulgence become apparent.
The feeling of waking up with makeup still on our face is a reminder of what our skin has endured throughout the night. The heaviness of the makeup, combined with sweat and dehydration, creates a suffocating sensation. Our skin feels clogged with impurities, longing to breathe freely once again.
The evidence of a dehydrated night shows, as our skin feels tight and parched. It craves the replenishment that only water can provide. Every movement, every touch, reminds us of our thirsty skin and its need to restore its natural vitality asap. The combination of sleeping with makeup, sweat, and dehydration creates a trio of discomfort.
But there is hope. We can choose to prioritize self-care and begin on a journey of recovery. By gently cleansing our face, replenishing lost moisture, and showing our skin some tlc, we can gradually ease the physical and emotional toll of a hungover morning.
Remember, everyone is different, so listen to your own needs and adjust the routine accordingly. Take this time to make it cozy, and give your body what it needs to recover from a hangover.
10 Steps to Rescue Hangover Skin:
To recover from a hangover, it’s important to focus on both skincare and overall wellness. Here’s a suggested routine that blends all 3:
1. Start To Hydrate
I am unfortunately guilty of waking up to empty takeaway bags or boxes in my room after a night out. First thing to do is to trash those and open a window. Then drink (sip so your stomach doesn’t get a shock) a glass of water.
2. Double Cleanse and Quick Shower
Head to the bathroom and gently brush your teeth, if you have a tongue scraper, even better. Next up, Start with a gentle yet thorough cleansing oil or balm balm followed by a mild cleanser to remove any leftover makeup and impurities. This will allow your skin to breathe and recover.
Take a superfast shower with the purpose of feeling refreshed. (Some people may experience increased sweating as part of their hangover symptoms, so the ‘everything shower’ is later.) After towel drying, I go in with a mild moisturizer from head to toe.
3. Light Meal
Afterwards slip into your coziest, comfiest outfit and make a mini breakfast. Something light and simple like toast, or oatmeal and a soothing cup of herbal tea such as ginger or peppermint, to soothe your stomach and promote relaxation. After breakfast, get a big cup or jug of water to keep with you and stay hydrated throughout the day. You can also make a rehydration drink. I usually mix water, a pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon, and a teaspoon of honey, but individual preferences and tolerances may vary so mix your preferred ingredient combo.
4. Light Clean
Give the place the light clean, it can really help you feel better by promoting a sense of calm and clarity. Set a timer for (MAX) 10mins. This is not a deep cleaning day, this is recovery and recharge day.
5. Fresh Air
Next step is, if you feel up to it, fresh air! It can help clear your mind and invigorate your senses. Combine this with a grocery haul or just a little walk, to figure out meals for the rest of the day.
6. Comfort Food
Prioritize foods that are gentle on your digestive system and are supportive of liver function. e.g. leafy greens like spinach and kale, whole grains, soup, eggs or lean proteins. Again keep it simple, (even if you do opt for a takeaway). And in some cases for me oven french fries and salad were all I could manage.
7. Nap Time
After a hearty meal take some relaxing time while digesting, go over last night’s pictures, check in on how friends are doing, watch tv, read, whatever you feel up for. You may even need a nap as alcohol can affect normal sleep quality.
After good food, rest and hydrating throughout the day, your body is on its way to recovery from that dreadful hangover. Now, it’s time to take some additional steps to replenish essential nutrients and restore your energy levels.
8. Stretch
Taking a moment to stretch can be incredibly rejuvenating, especially after a night of dancing. Rest assured, we’re not suggesting an intensive 1-hour bootcamp workout. Instead, explore the selection of fantastic bed yoga videos available online. Yes, bed yoga! Select one that resonates with you, and enjoy a few minutes of soothing stretches to unwind and recharge.
9. Everything Shower
Now is for the grand finale that is ‘the everything shower’. See my previous post if you would like inspiration for the steps. Indulge in your most luxurious products and pamper yourself.
10. Relax
Don’t underestimate the power of rest. Allow your body the time it needs to recover by getting a good night’s sleep or taking short naps throughout the day. Quality rest is essential for your body to heal. Hangovers can leave you feeling drained, but with the right care, you can bounce back and reclaim your day. Remember, your body is remarkable in its ability to recover. Listen to its cues, nourish it with wholesome foods, and give it the rest it deserves.
